Accommodations

“The declaration is part of a wider debate over “reasonable accommodation,” or how far Quebecers should be prepared to change their customs so as not to offend immigrants.” Reuters

Excuse me? These people are immigrants – this means they are willing to leave their home country to declare allegiance to some other country. No one is forcing them to choose Canada, Germany, or America over Mexico, Peru, or Algeria. They have a choice in their destination, therefore they have demonstrated they are willing to embrace the ways and laws of their new land.

Leaving their home country means abandoning the laws and most of the practices of that country. It’s to be expected they will keep those practices which do not break the laws of their new homeland. That means they get to keep their diet – at least as far as the ingredients are available. They get to keep all religious observances which do not break secular laws – secular laws must transcend religious laws or we get a situation where people will argue over which religious laws take precedence over whom.
