Car From Side

So, I rescued my car from the wrecker lot (because I didn’t know where to send it). The mechanic said to put it in my driveway and he’d walk over to look at it and see if he could fix it. He’s kind of swamped with work right now and didn’t have anywhere for my car to be parked. Since I live just 1 block away from his shop, parking in my drive gives him space and he can take a look at it.

There are parts of it he won’t be able to fix – like the cracked front windshield. I only took one picture of the driver’s side before it was too dark to get any more pictures, but the passenger’s side is dreadful, all cobwebby with cracks where the airbag smacked it.

But really, it’s not so bad. Pull the front bumper forward off the tire, pound the hood down a bit and pop out the part around the headlight, put in a new headlight, and that can be done roughly even by me, so that’s OK.

There are no leaks, so I don’t think there was any major engine damage. I haven’t had the courage to start the engine yet.

Maybe tomorrow.

I’ll let my mechanic do it.

I never knew that airbags were packed with a toxic chemical. I don’t think they tell you that breathing the fumes from it can make you sick (it did me, but I thought it was just the smoke itself, not the chemicals in the smoke), and can seriously injure you. I know Itzl would not have been hurt if the airbag hadn’t smacked him and I’m wondering if the fumes didn’t contribute to his spaciness for a couple of hours after the accident.

I’m not getting the airbags reset; the mechanic said it wasn’t worth it, and I agree. I think, for me, the airbags pose a greater risk than not having them. Between the toxic fumes and the physical damage it can cause, it’s not worth it to me. Other people may feel differently and that’s fine. This is still America – you can have your airbags and I can forgo them, and we’ll all be happy.
